Biography of Umarali Kuvvatov

The head of the opposition movement Group 24 Kuvvatov Umarali Izzatovich was born on 21 November 1968 in Dushanbe (Tajikistan) and grew up in an orphanage.

Quvvatov began his career as a sander at the factory. Later he opened his own business and created a company for the importing of liquefied natural gas, petroleum products and building materials to Tajikistan.

In 2003, Kuvvatov has created the company “Tojiron”, which specialized in oil and gas transportation and for 10 years headed the company. He developed such projects as “gold TRANS Tur” for international transportation, “autodiagnostics” for diagnosticing of vehicles and technical inspection; brick factory for the production of burnt bricks; the pipeline across the river Panj; transportation of liquefied natural gas and other oil products to Afghanistan.

From 2001 to 2012, Quvvatov in close collaboration with brother-in-law of the President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon – Shamsullo Sohibov supplied fuels and lubricants to NATO in Afghanistan.

By the result of conflict with Shamsullo Sohibov, he emigrated and became an opposition’s activist. Quvvatov said that he left his homeland because of persecution by the country’s authorities.

In 2012, first he went to Moscow, and when Tajikistan has requested his extradition he moved to Dubai (UAE), where in 2013 he was arrested by the request of Tajik authorities. He spent 10 months in the prison, but he was not extradited to his homeland. Quvvatov went to Turkey, where in December 2014, along with three colleagues was detained at the request of official Dushanbe, but after two months of the arrest they all were released.

In Tajikistan, Quvvatov was accused with the fake criminal cases on fraudulent activities and embezzlement.

On 9th of October 2014 the Supreme court of Tajikistan has recognized “Group 24”, which led by Quvvatov  “an extremist organization” and made the decision to ban its activities in the territory of the Republic of Tajikistan. Umarali Quvvatov was killed on 5 of March 2015 in Turkey (in our version, the murder was organized and executed by the secret services and orders of Emomali Rahmon).

Umarali Kuvvatov was married to Kumrinisso Hafizova.
