Seven years ago, on this day, March 5, by order of Rakhmonov(The President of Tajikistan since 1994), Umarali Kuvvatov was killed.
Umarali Kuvvatov was one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Tajikistan, in a short time he became one of the most influential figures in the country. However, his success and influence in society attracted the attention of Rakhmonov and did not give him peace.
In the end, the property of Umarali Kuvvatov was arrested, and he himself was planned to be imprisoned. But Umarali Kuvvatov managed to leave for Russia, where he began his political struggle with the Rakhmonov regime.
The beginning of his political career coincided with the sad events in Khorog in 2012, when 25-30 young guys fighting for freedom were killed. In memory of these young people who were not afraid to oppose Rakhmonov, the movement founded by Umarali Kuvvatov – “Group 24” was called.
The movement quickly gained popularity and Rakhmonov decided that it could in the future lead to the fall of his regime. The persecution of the leader of the movement, Umarali Kuvvatov, forced him to leave Russia. Persecution continued constantly, but did not break a strong spirit and a person confident in his rightfulness. Seeing that Umarali Kuvvatov does not stop his opposition activities, but on the contrary, is becoming more and more popular and the number of his supporters is steadily growing, Rakhmonov decides to kill his opponent.
On March 5, 2015, Umarali Kuvvatov, as well as his wife and children, were poisoned by killers sent by Rakhmonov. Upon learning of the poisoning, Umarali Kuvvatov went outside, where he was shot.
Every year on this tragic day, March 5th, we remember him. Every year we become more and more, we continue his path.
On this day, every year, his faithful associates gather in one of the countries to honor the memory of the founder of the political movement “Group 24”, read sura from the Holy Koran and talk about his great deeds. And as long as the political movement “Group 24” exists, this tradition will continue.
Umarali Kuvvatov, at the cost of his life, paved the way for us: the way to a bright future, the way to build a democratic, law-abiding and prosperous society. And we must follow this thorny and dangerous path in memory of Umarali Kuvvatov and for the sake of our children.
