The meeting of representatives of the “Group 24” with a member of the European Parliament, Brando Benifei

As we reported earlier, the representatives of the political movement Group 24 have arrived yesterday with an official visit in Brussels, the capital of Belgium in order to hold a series of high-level meetings with senior officials of this state, as well as with representatives of the European Parliament and some international human rights organizations. The first meeting of the representatives of “Group 24” has was with Mr. Brando Benifei, the member of European Parliament from the democratic party of Italy, as well as the “Delegation to the EU-Kazakhstan, EU-Kyrgyzstan, EU-Uzbekistan and EU-Tajikistan Parliamentary Cooperation Committees and for relations with Turkmenistan and Mongolia”.

During the meeting, there was discussed the important issues related to the political situation and the crisis in Tajikistan. One of the key points of the meeting was the case of detention of the leader of Group 24, Suhrob Zafar and Nasimjon Sharipov in Turkey, who are actually under threat of extradition to Tajikistan. In this case, the first question of the member of the European Parliament was what would happen to them if they would be extradited? In response, our representatives explained him the current political situation in Tajikistan and the government’s cruel treatment to the opposition, giving him the examples and evidences and emphasized, that from the dictatorial regime can be expected the worst.

Of course, S. Zafar and Nasimjon Sharipov will face a long prison sentence or death, and as the experiences show, this has happened before with other oppositionists. Mr. Benefi, in turn stressed, that they will do everything in their power to release the political activists. We remain, that the head of the “Group 24” Suhrob Zafar and its representative in Turkey Nasimjon Sharipov were detained on March 19th, this year, by the Turkish law enforcement agencies at the request of the government of Tajikistan and their case is still under consideration. At the same time, the government of Tajikistan is making it’s effort to extradite these political activists from Turkey to Tajikistan.
