A Year in the Dictator’s Captivity: Remembering Suhrob Zafar and Nasimjon Sharipov

March 10, 2024, marked a dark day in the struggle for freedom and justice in Tajikistan. On this day, Suhrob Zafar, the leader of the political movement “Group 24”, disappeared in Turkey. Six months later, the ruthless Prosecutor General Yusuf Rakhmonov proudly announced that Zafar had been extradited to Tajikistan. Shortly afterward, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Alongside him, Nasimjon Sharipov was also sentenced to 20 years behind bars.

Today, March 10, 2025, marks one year since these two freedom fighters fell into the hands of an authoritarian regime. A year filled with torture, humiliation, and lawlessness—tactics that Rahmon’s dictatorship has long used against its opponents.

The abduction of political dissidents abroad and their forced extradition to Tajikistan has become a systematic tool of this regime. Dozens of individuals have already suffered the same fate. But how is it possible that in the 21st century, under the watchful eyes of international organizations and the global community, such acts of state-sponsored terror continue with impunity?

Until the awakened Tajik society rises decisively and holds Rahmon’s dictatorship accountable, these crimes will not cease.

The anniversary of Suhrob Zafar’s abduction is not just a tragic date in history. It is a call to action for all who fight for freedom, justice, and human rights.

Rahmon’s authoritarian regime may kidnap opposition figures, subject them to torture, and sentence them to long prison terms. But no dictator can crush the spirit and will of the people.

Suhrob Zafar and Nasimjon Sharipov may be behind bars today, but their names will forever remain in the memory of all freedom-loving people.

The world must not forget!

May this year of pain awaken the conscience of every free individual!
